GLP-1 for Fat Loss — What the Category Actually Is
GLP-1 is a hormone, not a product. The phrase "GLP-1 for fat loss" has come to mean a whole class of compounds that act on its receptor — and the class is where the useful distinctions live.
Glucagon-like peptide-1 is an incretin: a gut hormone released after eating that acts on receptors in the pancreas and the brain. Compounds described as "GLP-1s" are receptor AGONISTS — molecules engineered to bind that receptor and resist the enzyme that clears the natural hormone in minutes. That resistance, not novelty of target, is what made the class practical.
The class then splits by how many receptors a molecule engages. Single-agonist compounds act on GLP-1 alone. Dual agonists add GIP, a second incretin receptor — tirzepatide is the best-documented example. Triple agonists add glucagon receptor activity on top; retatrutide is the compound at that end of the literature. More receptors is not automatically "better" — it is a different pharmacology, and the research questions differ accordingly.
The distinction that matters commercially in South Africa is REGULATORY, not chemical. Some molecules in this class are registered prescription medicines, made under pharmaceutical quality systems and dispensed by pharmacies against a prescription.
