The flagship of the St Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology — its pineal parent, epithalamin, was followed in elderly cohorts for up to 12 years.

Epitalon (also spelled Epithalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) modelled on Epithalamin, a regulatory peptide produced by the pineal gland. Developed at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology, it has been studied in Russia for several decades as a peptide bioregulator of the pineal-neuroendocrine axis. Epitalon is most noted in research for its proposed activation of telomerase, the enzyme that extends telomeric DNA — a central mechanism in cellular replicative lifespan. Preclinical and limited clinical studies report normalisation of circadian melatonin rhythms, antioxidant activity, and oncostatic effects in aging animal populations, alongside elongation of telomeres in somatic cell cultures. As a short, stable peptide it is widely used as a model compound in longevity, pineal-function, and gerontology research. Supplied as a 10 mg vial for laboratory research only.
