Reviews EPO signalling outside the blood system, in inflammation and metabolism.
Reviews detection strategies for EPO misuse in sport, where it is prohibited.
The kidney’s oxygen sensor in hormone form — the master signal for red-cell production.
Each vial contains 5,000 IU of lyophilised erythropoietin (EPO), supplied as a sterile powder for reconstitution. Erythropoietin is a 165-amino-acid glycoprotein hormone made mainly by the kidney in response to low oxygen. It binds the EPO receptor on erythroid progenitors, signalling through JAK2–STAT5 to sustain red-cell production, and a growing literature describes non-haematopoietic roles in inflammation, metabolism and tissue protection. Recombinant EPO is a registered prescription medicine for anaemia; it is prohibited in sport at all times, and its detection has been a major focus of anti-doping science. It holds no registration as a medicine in South Africa in this form and is supplied here strictly as research material. Findings described are from published laboratory, animal and clinical-research literature and are not statements about outcomes for any reader.
Mechanism, as studied
EPO binds its receptor on erythroid progenitors and signals through JAK2–STAT5 to sustain red-cell production.
