The usual trade-off with anxiolytics is sedation: you pay for calm with alertness. Selank is studied precisely because that trade-off does not appear the same way.
Selank is a synthetic analogue of tuftsin, a naturally occurring immune-modulating peptide, with the same proline-glycine-proline stabilising tail used on Semax to slow enzymatic breakdown. The two peptides come from the same Russian research programme and are often studied together.
The trade-off it is studied against
Conventional anxiolytics generally work by potentiating GABA, the brain's main inhibitory signal. Turning inhibition up broadly reduces anxiety, and it also reduces alertness, reaction time and memory formation — because those depend on the same signalling being able to fire.
Selank is investigated for anxiolytic activity through different signalling, and the research interest is specifically that the sedation and cognitive cost associated with GABAergic compounds is not reported in the same way. Whether it replicates at scale is exactly what the ongoing work is for — but that is the question being asked.
Serotonin, BDNF and the immune link
The mechanistic research points in three directions at once: modulation of serotonergic signalling, effects on BDNF expression similar in kind to Semax, and immune-modulating activity inherited from its tuftsin origin. That breadth is unusual and is part of why it is difficult to summarise in one sentence.
