Hormone, anabolic & androgen-receptor research compounds
Somatropin (Human Growth Hormone)
Also known as hGH · rhGH · growth hormone · HGH
Recombinant human growth hormone — the 191-amino-acid pituitary hormone that secretagogues stimulate indirectly.
In 60 seconds
Prescription medicine for GH deficiency and specific growth disorders, now including weekly long-acting forms. A 2008 systematic review found limited evidence that GH improves athletic performance in healthy people.
- A systematic review of GH’s effects on athletic performance in healthy people, with its safety signals.
- Reviews the decline of GH with age and the controversy over treating older adults.
- Reviews once-weekly long-acting GH preparations against daily GH.
Mechanism
GH acts at the GH receptor, with direct effects (lipolysis, insulin antagonism) and indirect effects through hepatic IGF-1 (growth, protein synthesis). Secretion declines with age (the "somatopause").
Research status
Prescription medicine for GH deficiency and specific growth disorders, now including weekly long-acting forms. Prohibited in sport.

Safety signals in the literature
A 2008 systematic review found limited evidence that GH improves athletic performance in healthy people. GH use in ageing without pituitary disease remains controversial.
Legal status (South Africa)
Androgens and anabolic steroids are scheduled substances in South Africa (prescription-only under the Medicines and Related Substances Act) and are prohibited in sport. SARM-class compounds are unapproved for human use anywhere. Educational content only — no use guidance.
