Circadian Rhythm
Also known as: body clock · sleep-wake cycle · circadian
The roughly 24-hour internal clock that times sleep, hormone release and body temperature, set mainly by light.
A master clock in the hypothalamus (the suprachiasmatic nucleus) keeps time and is reset daily by light. It signals the pineal gland to release melatonin in the evening and shapes the timing of cortisol and growth hormone.
