REM Sleep
Also known as: rapid eye movement sleep · dream sleep · paradoxical sleep
The sleep stage with rapid eye movements, vivid dreams and muscle near-paralysis, dominating the later cycles of the night.
REM sleep alternates with non-REM sleep in cycles of roughly 90 minutes, with REM periods lengthening towards morning. The brain is highly active while the body’s muscles are largely switched off.
