Hormone, anabolic & androgen-receptor research compounds
EPO (Erythropoietin)
Also known as erythropoietin · epoetin
The kidney-derived glycoprotein hormone that drives red-cell production.
In 60 seconds
Recombinant EPO is a registered prescription medicine for anaemia. The clinical literature describes raised blood viscosity, hypertension and thrombotic risk when red-cell mass rises too far — the basis of its regulation in medicine and sport.
- Reviews erythropoietin’s regulation, receptor signalling and role in red-cell production.
- Reviews EPO signalling outside the blood system.
- Reviews detection strategies for EPO misuse in sport.
Mechanism
Erythropoietin is released by the kidney when tissue oxygen falls. It binds the EPO receptor on erythroid progenitors and signals through JAK2–STAT5 to keep them alive and maturing into red cells; non-haematopoietic receptor signalling is studied in other tissues.
Research status
Recombinant EPO is a registered prescription medicine for anaemia. It is prohibited in sport at all times.

Legal status (South Africa)
Androgens and anabolic steroids are scheduled substances in South Africa (prescription-only under the Medicines and Related Substances Act) and are prohibited in sport. SARM-class compounds are unapproved for human use anywhere. Educational content only — no use guidance.
