hMG (Human Menopausal Gonadotropin)
Also known as human menopausal gonadotropin · menotropin · menotrophin
A gonadotropin preparation purified from urine that carries both FSH and LH activity, used in assisted reproduction.
In 60 seconds
Registered prescription fertility medicine, used under specialist supervision in IVF/ICSI cycles and in some male hypogonadotropic hypogonadism protocols. In IVF meta-analyses, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome rates were not significantly different from recombinant FSH.
- A meta-analysis of IVF/ICSI cycles reported a higher live-birth rate with hMG than recombinant FSH (OR 1.20), with no significant difference in OHSS rates.
- Across five randomised trials, ongoing pregnancy and live-birth rates were similar between highly purified hMG and recombinant FSH.
- In 29 gonadotrophin-deficient men on gonadotrophin therapy, median time to any sperm in the ejaculate was about 5.5 months and conception occurred in 22 of 43 treatment courses.
Mechanism
hMG supplies follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which drives follicle growth in the ovary and supports spermatogenesis in the testis, together with luteinising-hormone (LH) activity, which acts on theca and Leydig cells. That LH component is what separates it from FSH-only preparations.
Research status
Registered prescription fertility medicine, used under specialist supervision in IVF/ICSI cycles and in some male hypogonadotropic hypogonadism protocols.
