Triptorelin
Also known as Decapeptyl · Trelstar · triptorelin pamoate
A GnRH-agonist decapeptide with a D-tryptophan at position 6, used to suppress sex hormones and in assisted reproduction.
In 60 seconds
Registered medicine (prostate cancer, endometriosis, adjuvant breast cancer, central precocious puberty, fertility). As with other GnRH agonists, effects follow from sex-steroid suppression after an initial flare.
- Explains how a D-amino acid at position 6 increases enzymatic resistance and receptor affinity.
- Reviews a 6-month triptorelin formulation for advanced prostate cancer.
- Reviews triptorelin with tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor as adjuvant breast-cancer therapy.
Mechanism
The D-amino-acid substitution at position 6 resists breakdown and raises receptor affinity. Continuous dosing suppresses gonadal steroids; single doses are used to trigger ovulation in IVF protocols.
