An analytical method that measures a molecule’s mass to confirm a peptide’s identity matches its intended sequence.
Mass spectrometry (MS) measures the mass-to-charge ratio of ionised molecules, yielding a very precise molecular weight. For a peptide, the measured mass is compared to the theoretical mass calculated from its amino-acid sequence.
A match confirms identity — that the vial actually contains the peptide it claims to. This complements HPLC, which measures purity: together they answer "is it the right molecule, and how pure is it?"
MS-confirmed identity is a standard component of a complete Certificate of Analysis.
