SNARE Complex
Also known as: SNARE · SNAP-25 · vesicle fusion complex
The protein machinery that fuses vesicles with the cell membrane to release neurotransmitter — the target of Argireline and SNAP-8.
Three proteins (SNAP-25, syntaxin and synaptobrevin) twist together to pull a neurotransmitter vesicle onto the nerve membrane. At the nerve–muscle junction that release makes muscle contract.
Expression-line peptides such as Argireline and SNAP-8 mimic part of SNAP-25 and are designed to interfere with complex assembly — a much milder version of how botulinum toxin works.
