Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL)

Also known as: TEWL · skin water loss · barrier function

The water that evaporates through the skin — the standard measure of how well the skin barrier is working.

The outer layer of the skin, a "brick and mortar" of cells and lipids, holds water in. When the barrier is damaged, TEWL rises and skin looks dull and feels dry. Cosmetic and dermatology studies measure TEWL to test barrier-supporting products.

Low TEWL and good hydration are the physiological basis of the Korean "glass skin" look.
