Peptide Storage Guide: Keeping Compounds Stable

How to store peptides before and after reconstitution: fridge vs freezer, protecting from light and heat, and realistic shelf-life expectations so your research material stays potent.

Peptides are fragile molecules. The same properties that make them biologically interesting — precise amino-acid chains folded into a specific shape — also make them vulnerable to heat, light, moisture and repeated temperature swings. Storage is not an afterthought; it is what protects the value of every vial you buy.

The good news is that lyophilised (freeze-dried) peptides are remarkably robust when kept dry and cold, and reconstituted solutions have a predictable shelf life if handled well. This guide covers both states.

STEP-BY-STEP

  1. Store lyophilised vials cold and dry

    Unopened, freeze-dried peptide powder is stable for a long time. For weeks-to-months of storage, the fridge (2–8°C) is fine. For long-term storage, the freezer (−20°C or colder) extends stability further. Keep vials dry — moisture is the enemy of lyophilised powder.

    Tip: Avoid a fridge door shelf — the constant opening causes temperature swings.

  2. Protect everything from light and heat

    Store vials in their box or an opaque container. UV light and heat both degrade peptides. Never leave a vial on a warm windowsill, near an oven, or in a car.

  3. Bring to room temperature before reconstituting

    When you are ready to mix, let the cold vial reach room temperature first to avoid condensation and to help the peptide dissolve cleanly. See the reconstitution guide for the full procedure.

  4. Refrigerate reconstituted solutions immediately

    Once a peptide is dissolved in bacteriostatic water, it must live in the fridge (2–8°C). Store the vial upright and keep it away from the freezer compartment — freezing and thawing a reconstituted solution repeatedly damages the peptide.

  5. Minimise temperature cycling

    Every time a vial warms up and cools down, it takes a small toll. Draw what you need efficiently and return the vial to the fridge promptly rather than leaving it out on the bench.

  6. Inspect before every use

    Before drawing, check the solution is still clear. Cloudiness, discolouration or floating particles indicate degradation — discard rather than use.

Realistic shelf life

Lyophilised (unopened, cold): months in the fridge, longer in the freezer. Freeze-dried powder is the most stable state a peptide can be in.

Reconstituted (refrigerated): typically stable for a number of weeks at 2–8°C, though the exact window varies by compound. Some are more delicate than others.

Because shelf life is compound-specific, treat these as general ranges and follow any batch-specific guidance supplied with your order. When in doubt, the clarity check in step six is your most reliable signal.
