Bacteriostatic water is the quiet workhorse of peptide research. It is the liquid almost every lyophilised compound is reconstituted into, and getting it right is the difference between a vial that stays clean for weeks and one that has to be thrown out after a day.
The name is literal: it is sterile water made bacteriostatic — meaning it inhibits bacterial growth — by the addition of 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. That preservative is what allows a rubber-stoppered vial to be punctured and drawn from repeatedly across a research period without compromising sterility between draws.

Understand what is in the vial
A standard bacteriostatic water vial is water for injection plus 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The benzyl alcohol is a bacteriostatic preservative — it stops bacteria multiplying, which is why the vial survives multiple needle punctures.
Store it correctly before opening
Sealed, keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct light. It does not need refrigeration until it is opened. Check the expiry printed on the vial.
Swab before every single draw
Wipe the rubber stopper with a fresh alcohol swab each time you insert a needle and let it dry. The preservative buys you tolerance, not immunity — clean technique is still what keeps the vial usable.
Tip: Use a fresh needle for each draw. Re-using a needle dulls it and risks contamination.
Draw slowly and measure your volume
Invert the vial, insert the needle, and pull to your target volume. This is the water you will add to your peptide — decide the amount from your target concentration first (the calculator does the maths).
Refrigerate once opened and track the date
After first puncture, store the vial refrigerated and note the open date. A multi-dose vial is designed for repeated draws over a research period, but it is not indefinite — replace it if it becomes cloudy or reaches its discard window.
Bacteriostatic water vs sterile water vs saline
Sterile water for injection is pure water with no preservative. It is single-use: once opened it should be used immediately and discarded, because there is nothing to inhibit bacterial growth. It is the wrong choice for any vial you intend to draw from more than once.
Bacteriostatic water adds 0.9% benzyl alcohol, making it the standard multi-draw reconstitution fluid for peptide research. This is what most protocols call for.
Sodium chloride (saline) 0.9% is salt water. It is isotonic but generally not preferred for peptide reconstitution, as some peptides are less stable in a saline environment and the salt can affect certain preparations. Bacteriostatic water remains the default.
How much you need per vial
A single 3 ml bacteriostatic water vial comfortably covers a typical reconstitution — many peptide vials are mixed with 1–3 ml. If you are running a full protocol or a stack of several compounds, buy enough vials to give each peptide a fresh diluent source.
