Research peptides for cycling & triathlon in South Africa

Endurance sport in South Africa, the Cape Epic, 94.7, Ironman African Championship, has a long and uncomfortable relationship with the peptide literature, because the erythropoiesis research that defined doping in the 1990s is peptide research. Coaches, physiologists and the riders themselves read this literature knowing exactly where it leads.

This page covers it honestly: mitochondrial-density and AMPK research, the oxygen-transport and tissue-protection literature that grew out of EPO biology, and the redox and recovery work. It names the compounds, grades the evidence and states the anti-doping status. The compounds are supplied for laboratory research only, and nothing here is for a competitor.

What this field's literature looks at

Mitochondrial research is the endurance scientist's home ground. MOTS-c activates AMPK, increases exercise capacity in mice and rises in plasma after acute exercise in humans; SS-31 binds cardiolipin and preserves ATP output under ischaemic stress; NAD+ is the cofactor behind sirtuin-mediated mitochondrial biogenesis. These are the mechanisms behind the adaptations that training produces, studied directly.

Oxygen transport is the sensitive literature. Erythropoietin sustains red-cell production through its receptor and JAK2, and its prohibition in sport is one of the founding events of modern anti-doping. The newer research is non-haematopoietic: ARA-290 is an EPO-derived peptide designed to act on the tissue-protective innate repair receptor without raising red-cell mass, studied in kidney injury and corneal nerve regrowth. Reading both halves is how an endurance physiologist understands the field.

MOTS-c

Research vial

The mitochondrial peptide studied in mice for AMPK activation and increased exercise capacity, with human plasma levels that rise after exercise. The closest thing to an endurance-physiology peptide in the literature.

SS-31

Research vial

The cardiolipin-binding peptide that preserved cristae structure and speeded ATP recovery in ischaemic models, now with a human regulatory approval in a rare mitochondrial disease.

ARA-290

Research vial

An EPO-derived peptide engineered to act on the innate repair receptor without the haematopoietic effect. Studied in kidney ischaemia-reperfusion and in a phase 2b corneal nerve-fibre trial; the non-doping half of EPO biology.

NAD+

Research vial

The coenzyme behind sirtuin-driven mitochondrial biogenesis and muscle ATP synthesis, studied in exercise metabolism and ageing muscle.

Glutathione

Research vial

Studied in human trials for exercise-induced oxidative stress and fatigue markers, the redox endpoint most relevant to prolonged efforts.

Questions cycling & triathlon ask

Do you supply EPO?

EPO is listed on the site for laboratory research with its own research page. It is prohibited in sport and is not discussed on this page beyond its place in the literature.

Is MOTS-c prohibited?

Compounds not approved for human use fall under the Prohibited List's catch-all. A competing athlete should assume yes and consult their federation.

What is ARA-290?

A peptide derived from the EPO helix B region, designed to engage the tissue-protective receptor without raising haematocrit. It is studied in kidney injury, neuropathy and corneal nerve regrowth.

What does the certificate cover?

Compound identity and HPLC purity on an independent Janoshik Analytical report.
