Mechanism & Biology

Cytoprotection

Also known as: cellular protection · cytoprotective

Protection of cells against injury — a proposed mechanism for gut- and tissue-protective research peptides.

Cytoprotection means shielding cells from damage — whether from toxins, inflammation, oxidative stress or mechanical injury. A cytoprotective compound helps cells survive and maintain function under stress.

The concept is prominent in the research on gut-protective and tissue-repair peptides such as BPC-157, whose name (Body Protection Compound) reflects the cytoprotective activity attributed to it in the gastric literature.

Cytoprotection is often studied alongside angiogenesis and anti-inflammatory signalling as complementary parts of a repair response.
