Neurogenesis

Also known as: neuron formation · adult neurogenesis

The formation of new neurons; supporting it is a proposed mechanism in cognitive and neuroprotective peptide research.

Neurogenesis is the process by which new neurons are generated, notably in the hippocampus, a region tied to learning and memory. Once thought impossible in adults, it is now an active area of neuroscience.

Supporting neurogenesis, often via neurotrophic factors such as BDNF, is a proposed mechanism behind nootropic and neuroprotective research peptides, linking it to memory and mood.
