Sterility

Also known as: sterility testing · sterile

Freedom from viable micro-organisms; sterility testing confirms a preparation is not contaminated by bacteria or fungi.

Sterility means the absence of any viable micro-organisms — bacteria, fungi or their spores. For an injectable-format research material it is a fundamental quality attribute.

Sterility testing incubates samples to confirm nothing grows. It complements endotoxin testing (which detects bacterial residue even when no live organisms remain) and is preserved in use by bacteriostatic water and sterile technique.
