Preparation & Handling

Sterile Technique

Also known as: aseptic technique · sterile handling

The practice of avoiding contamination when reconstituting and drawing from vials — wiping stoppers, single-use needles.

Sterile (aseptic) technique is the set of practices that keep a research vial free of contamination: wiping the rubber stopper with an alcohol swab before every entry, using a fresh sterile needle each time, and not touching needle tips or stopper surfaces.

Even with a bacteriostatic preservative present, poor technique can introduce contaminants that spoil a reconstituted peptide and invalidate research.

Good technique, refrigeration and the use of bacteriostatic water together determine how long a reconstituted vial remains usable.
