Mechanism & Biology

Telomere / Telomerase

Also known as: telomere · telomerase · telomere length

Protective caps on chromosome ends (telomeres) and the enzyme that extends them (telomerase) — central to longevity research.

Telomeres are repetitive DNA caps at the ends of chromosomes that protect the genetic code from erosion each time a cell divides. They shorten with every division, and their length is treated as a marker of cellular ageing.

Telomerase is the enzyme that can add length back to telomeres. Interest in activating it underpins much longevity research — and it is the mechanism most associated with Epitalon, which has been studied for telomerase activation.

Telomere biology sits at the centre of the cellular-ageing and healthspan research category.
