The short answer
Paying with Bitcoin is lawful in South Africa. Bitcoin is not legal tender, so no shop has to accept it, but a merchant and a customer may agree to use it — as we do at checkout.
How crypto is regulated
In October 2022 the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) declared crypto assets a financial product under the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act. Since June 2023, businesses that provide crypto services — exchanges such as Luno and VALR — must be licensed by the FSCA as crypto asset service providers (CASPs).
How SARS treats crypto
SARS treats crypto assets as assets, not currency: normal income tax rules apply, and gains or income from crypto must be declared. Whether spending Bitcoin creates a taxable event for you depends on your circumstances — speak to a registered tax practitioner. We do not give tax advice.
What this means at our checkout
- Every Bitcoin order is a normal order: your name, phone number and delivery address are recorded and the order is invoiced in rand.
- Refunds follow the same returns policy as EFT orders.
- We never ask for your wallet keys or recovery words.
