Growth-hormone secretagogues & GH-axis peptides
Hexarelin
Also known as examorelin
A potent synthetic growth-hormone-releasing hexapeptide with additional, receptor-mediated actions studied in cardiovascular models.
In 60 seconds
Preclinical and small human studies; not an approved medicine. Like other GHRPs it can raise cortisol and prolactin; attenuation of the GH response with repeated exposure has been reported.
- Reviews evidence that hexarelin, via peripheral GHSR in heart and vessels, may have direct cardiovascular effects.
- A review of GH secretagogues weighing their reported effects against the limited long-term safety evidence.
- In an ischaemia-reperfusion kidney-injury model, hexarelin reduced apoptosis via the MDM2/p53 pathway.
Mechanism
Hexarelin activates the ghrelin receptor (GHSR) and releases GH. Research also describes direct cardiovascular actions through GHSR and the scavenger receptor CD36 in heart and vessel tissue, independent of GH.
Research status
Preclinical and small human studies; not an approved medicine.
