Growth-hormone secretagogues & GH-axis peptides
Octreotide
Also known as Sandostatin · somatostatin analogue
A long-acting synthetic analogue of somatostatin — the hormone that switches growth-hormone release off.
In 60 seconds
Approved for acromegaly and neuroendocrine tumours, with injectable, depot and oral forms; also used in chylothorax and other off-label settings. Gallstones and gastrointestinal effects are the class-recognised adverse effects; glucose regulation can shift.

- A phase 3 trial evaluated a subcutaneous octreotide depot in acromegaly.
- Reviews oral octreotide as a somatostatin-receptor ligand for acromegaly.
Mechanism
Octreotide binds somatostatin receptors (mainly SSTR2), suppressing GH, IGF-1 and many gut hormones. It is the pharmacological opposite of GH secretagogues and a standard treatment for GH excess.
Research status
Approved for acromegaly and neuroendocrine tumours, with injectable, depot and oral forms; also used in chylothorax and other off-label settings.
