Apoptosis is programmed cell death: a controlled, orderly self-destruction that safely removes damaged, infected or unwanted cells without spilling their contents and inflaming surrounding tissue.
It is central to senolytic research — clearing senescent "zombie" cells that resist normal apoptosis. FOXO4-DRI, for example, is studied for selectively pushing senescent cells back into apoptosis.
