Cold Chain
Also known as: cold storage · temperature-controlled shipping · peptide storage
Keeping temperature-sensitive peptides consistently cool from dispatch to storage to preserve integrity.
The cold chain is the unbroken sequence of temperature-controlled handling that keeps a temperature-sensitive compound cool from the moment it is dispatched until it is stored and used.
Lyophilised peptides are relatively robust, but heat still accelerates degradation, so orders are dispatched early in the week in protective, insulated packaging to avoid weekend transit delays. On arrival a lyophilised vial is refrigerated; reconstituted vials are always refrigerated.
Maintaining the cold chain protects both purity and the integrity of the peptide sequence over the study period.

RELATED TERMS
Lyophilised
Freeze-dried. Peptides are supplied as a lyophilised powder/pellet for stability, then reconstituted before study.
Reconstitution
The process of dissolving a lyophilised (freeze-dried) peptide in a sterile solvent such as bacteriostatic water before study.
Bacteriostatic Water
Sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, the standard solvent for reconstituting peptides so a multi-use vial stays sterile.
Half-Life
The time for a compound’s concentration to fall by half — a key determinant of dosing frequency in research.
