Vasopressin (AVP)

Also known as arginine vasopressin · AVP · antidiuretic hormone · ADH

The posterior-pituitary nonapeptide that controls water balance and blood pressure, and a central regulator of social and anxiety-related behaviour.

Registered medicine (vasodilatory shock, diabetes insipidus); intranasal research in human social behaviour. Clinical use carries vasoconstriction and fluid-balance risks; research doses in behavioural studies are small.

  • Reviews vasopressin’s systemic antidiuretic and cardiovascular roles across species.
  • Reviews oxytocin and vasopressin circuits in social behaviour and clinical research opportunities.
  • Reviews evidence for oxytocin and vasopressin in human social cognition.

Mechanism

Peripherally, AVP acts at V2 (kidney) and V1a (vascular) receptors. Centrally, AVP neurons acting via V1a and V1b receptors modulate social recognition, pair-bonding and stress responses — research often paired with oxytocin.

Research status

Registered medicine (vasodilatory shock, diabetes insipidus); intranasal research in human social behaviour.
