Carnosine
Also known as β-alanyl-L-histidine · L-carnosine · zinc L-carnosine (related)
A dipeptide (β-alanyl-L-histidine) abundant in muscle and brain, studied as a pH buffer, antioxidant and anti-glycation agent.
In 60 seconds
Dietary and supplement research, with small randomised trials in endurance and metabolic health; zinc-carnosine is a separate gastric compound. Reviews and trials report it as well tolerated.
- A comprehensive review of carnosine physiology since its 1900 discovery.
- Critically assesses human evidence for carnosine and β-alanine supplementation.
- A systematic review of carnosine’s effects on advanced glycation end-products.
Mechanism
Carnosine buffers acid in contracting muscle, chelates metals, scavenges reactive species and reacts with sugars to reduce advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). β-alanine is its rate-limiting precursor.
Research status
Dietary and supplement research, with small randomised trials in endurance and metabolic health; zinc-carnosine is a separate gastric compound.
