Mitochondrial & longevity research compounds
Humanin
Also known as HN · HNG (S14G analogue)
A 24-amino-acid peptide encoded in the mitochondrial genome — the first mitochondrial-derived peptide described — studied for cytoprotection.
In 60 seconds
Preclinical and observational research; the S14G analogue (HNG) is a more potent research form. No human interventional safety data.
- Reviews humanin as a 24-residue factor that suppresses neuronal death from Alzheimer’s-related insults.
- Describes humanin as the first mitochondrial-derived peptide and its interactions with IGF-I.
- A systematic review of humanin’s roles in ageing and age-related disease.
Mechanism
Humanin was discovered protecting neurons from Alzheimer’s-related insults. It acts through several receptors (including a trimeric cytokine-receptor complex and FPRL1) and interacts with IGF-1 signalling; circulating levels decline with age.
Research status
Preclinical and observational research; the S14G analogue (HNG) is a more potent research form. No approved medicine.
