Urolithin A

Also known as UA · Mitopure

A gut-microbiome metabolite of ellagitannins (pomegranate, berries, nuts) that stimulates mitophagy — the recycling of damaged mitochondria.

Several randomised human trials in middle-aged and older adults and athletes; marketed as a supplement. Trials report it as well tolerated over the study periods.

  • A randomised placebo-controlled trial measured muscle strength and mitochondrial biomarkers with urolithin A in middle-aged adults.
  • A randomised trial in older adults measured muscle endurance and mitochondrial markers.
  • A randomised trial examined urolithin A’s effect on markers of immune ageing, including T memory stem cells.

Mechanism

Only some people’s gut bacteria convert dietary ellagitannins to urolithin A. It induces mitophagy and is studied for muscle mitochondrial quality and immune ageing.
