SHLP2 (Small Humanin-Like Peptide 2)
Also known as SHLP-2 · small humanin-like peptide 2
A mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded in the 16S rRNA region, studied as an insulin sensitiser and cytoprotective signal.
In 60 seconds
Preclinical and observational human biomarker studies only. No human interventional safety data.
- In mice, systemic and central SHLP2 protected against diet-induced obesity and improved insulin sensitivity via POMC neurons.
- Reviews the eight known mitochondrial-derived peptides (MOTS-c, humanin, SHLP1-6) in energy metabolism.
- In an AMD cell model, exogenous SHLP2 had protective effects on mitochondrial function.
Mechanism
SHLP2 belongs to the humanin-like peptide family. In mice it acts on hypothalamic POMC neurons to regulate energy homeostasis and improves insulin sensitivity; in cells it shows chaperone-like and anti-apoptotic activity.
Research status
Preclinical and observational human biomarker studies only.
