Tissue-repair, gut & immune-signalling peptides
VIP (Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide)
Also known as vasoactive intestinal polypeptide · aviptadil
A 28-amino-acid neuropeptide of the secretin/glucagon family with vasodilatory, secretory and immune-modulating actions.
In 60 seconds
Research peptide; an inhaled/intravenous form (aviptadil) has been trialled in respiratory failure, with mixed results. Systemic VIP lowers blood pressure and can cause flushing and diarrhoea — the VIPoma syndrome illustrates excess VIP physiology.
- Reviews VIP/PACAP receptor biology in CNS and inflammatory disorders.
- In models, VIP promoted intestinal secretory-cell differentiation and reduced radiation injury.
- Studied VIP-loaded nanoparticles for immune modulation and stem-cell support in tendon repair models.
Mechanism
VIP acts through VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptors (shared with PACAP). It relaxes smooth muscle, stimulates intestinal secretion, regulates immune-cell function and is studied as a neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory signal.
Research status
Research peptide; an inhaled/intravenous form (aviptadil) has been trialled in respiratory failure, with mixed results. VIP-secreting tumours (VIPomas) are a separate clinical topic.
