Amino Acids Explained: The Building Blocks
You can’t really understand peptides without amino acids. Here’s the friendly version: the 20 building blocks, how they link up, and why their order is everything.
The 20-letter alphabet of life
Every peptide and protein in existence is spelled out from the same 20 common amino acids. Think of them as an alphabet: 20 letters that, arranged in different orders and lengths, can spell an almost infinite variety of "words" (peptides) and "sentences" (proteins).
Each amino acid shares a common backbone but has its own unique side chain — some water-loving, some water-fearing, some charged — and those differences are what give a finished peptide its character.
Essential vs non-essential
Your body can build about half of these amino acids itself. The others — the essential amino acids — must come from your diet, which is exactly why eating protein matters. When you digest that protein, it’s broken back down into amino acids your body reuses.
So the protein on your plate and the peptides in a research vial are, at the most basic level, made of the very same 20 ingredients.
How they link into a peptide
Amino acids join through a peptide bond — a chemical link between one amino acid’s "head" and the next one’s "tail". String several together and you have a peptide; string many and you have a protein.
This directional linking means a peptide has a defined start and end, which is why its sequence is always written in a specific order.
Why order is everything
The same amino acids in a different order make a completely different peptide with completely different behaviour — just like the same letters spell "listen" and "silent". The sequence determines the shape, and the shape determines what receptor it fits and what it does.
This is why research peptides are defined by their exact sequence, and why synthesis and verification focus on getting that order precisely right.
