Nature invented peptides first

Every living thing uses peptides. They’re one of biology’s oldest tools because they’re cheap to build, easy to break down, and endlessly customisable — swap a few amino acids and you get a completely different message. Long before humans synthesised them, evolution had been fine-tuning peptides for billions of years.

That’s worth remembering when peptides sound futuristic: they’re actually one of life’s most ancient technologies.

The peptides working inside you right now

Your own body runs on peptides. Insulin manages your blood sugar. Oxytocin drives bonding and childbirth. Glucagon raises blood sugar when it drops. Endorphins — literally "endogenous morphine" — are peptides that blunt pain and lift mood. Even glutathione, your cells’ master antioxidant, is a tiny three-amino-acid peptide.

These aren’t exotic additives; they’re the everyday chemistry keeping you alive.

Peptides as weapons and defences

Nature also weaponises peptides. Many venoms — from snakes, scorpions, spiders and cone snails — are cocktails of peptides that hit nerve or blood targets with pinpoint precision. Bee-sting venom contains the peptide melittin. Some of these have inspired real medicines built by copying the natural sequence.

On the defensive side, animals and plants make antimicrobial peptides (like defensins) as a front-line immune shield, punching holes in invading microbes.

From nature to the research vial

Because these natural sequences are so precise, researchers often study synthetic copies of them — the same molecule, made cleanly in a lab and verified for purity. That way the studied compound is identical every time, without the variability of extracting it from a living source.

It’s a neat loop: nature designs the peptide, and modern synthesis lets researchers study an exact, reproducible version of it.
