How Do Peptides Work?

A plain-English look at the mechanism: how a tiny molecule carries a specific instruction to a cell and gets a response.

The lock-and-key idea

Cells are covered in receptors — think of them as locks on the outside of the cell. A peptide is shaped to fit a particular lock, like a key. When the right peptide docks into the right receptor, it turns the lock and triggers a chain of events inside the cell.

This is why peptides are described as specific. A key for one lock won’t open another, so a well-designed peptide tends to affect one pathway rather than flooding the whole body with a broad signal.

What happens after the key turns

Turning the lock rarely does the work directly. Instead it kicks off a signalling cascade — a relay of messengers inside the cell that ends with the cell changing its behaviour: making more collagen, calming inflammation, releasing a hormone, or ramping up repair.

Because the peptide is the messenger and the cell does the actual work, effects can build up over a research protocol rather than switching on instantly.
