What Are Peptides?

A complete beginner’s answer: what peptides are, where they come from, the main categories, and why they matter for research.

The definition

A peptide is a molecule made of two or more amino acids joined by peptide bonds. Amino acids are the same 20 building blocks your body uses to make protein, so a peptide is essentially a mini-protein.

The dividing line is loose but useful: chains of roughly 2–50 amino acids are called peptides; longer, folded chains are called proteins. Insulin (51 amino acids) sits right on the boundary and is often called both.

Where peptides come from

There are three main sources. Endogenous peptides are the ones your own body produces — hormones, signalling molecules and immune factors. Dietary peptides come from the protein you eat and digest. Synthetic peptides are made in a lab, amino acid by amino acid, so researchers can study an exact, pure sequence.

Research peptides fall into that third group. They’re manufactured to a specific sequence, then verified for identity and purity — which is where terms like HPLC and Certificate of Analysis come in.

Because peptides are signalling molecules, researchers group them loosely by what pathway they act on:
