Peptides and Hormones: What’s the Connection?
Many of the body’s most important hormones are actually peptides. Here’s how the two overlap, where they differ, and why the distinction is worth knowing.
A big overlap, not two separate worlds

Some of the best-known hormones are peptides. Insulin and glucagon manage blood sugar. Oxytocin and vasopressin govern bonding and water balance. Growth hormone is a peptide too. These are peptides by structure and hormones by function at the same time.

Not all hormones are peptides
The overlap isn’t total. Another major hormone family is the steroid hormones, which are built on a fat-like structure rather than amino acids — a completely different chemistry from peptides. So "hormone" is the broad umbrella, and peptide hormones are one important branch under it.
Keeping this straight helps avoid the common beginner error of lumping every signalling molecule together.
Why the distinction is useful
Because peptide hormones are amino-acid chains, they share peptides’ traits: they’re specific, they’re usually fragile (which is why insulin is injected, not swallowed), and they can be synthesised for research.
