BEGINNER GUIDE
Understanding Research Peptide Terminology
Peptide guides throw around words like lyophilised, reconstitution and HPLC. Learn the dozen terms that unlock everything — in plain English, with examples.
The building-block words
Amino acid — a single building block; there are 20 common ones. Peptide bond — the link that joins them. Peptide — a short chain of amino acids. Sequence — the specific order of amino acids, which defines the peptide’s identity and behaviour.
Get these four and you understand what a peptide fundamentally is.
The physical-form words
Lyophilised — freeze-dried into a stable dry powder (what’s in the vial). Reconstitution — adding liquid to turn that powder into a usable solution. Bacteriostatic water — sterile water containing a tiny amount of benzyl alcohol to inhibit bacterial growth, commonly used for reconstitution. Concentration — how much peptide is in a given volume of liquid.
These describe the peptide’s journey from powder to solution. Our reconstitution calculator does the concentration maths for you.
The quality words
HPLC — the lab test that measures purity. Mass spectrometry — the test that confirms identity by weighing the molecule. Purity — the percentage of the batch that is the target peptide (e.g. ≥98%). CoA (Certificate of Analysis) — the batch-specific document reporting those results.
These four are how you verify what you’re actually buying — the heart of our how to verify peptide quality guide.
The biology words
Endogenous — made by the body itself (as opposed to synthetic). Receptor — the "lock" on a cell that a peptide "key" fits. Signalling — the messaging process peptides drive. Half-life — how long a compound lasts before the body breaks down half of it.
With this dozen words in hand, the rest of the peptide world suddenly reads clearly.
